![]() Halo: The Master Chief Collection is without a doubt, one of this year’s most ambitious titles. Unobtainable/glitched achievements: None Does difficulty affect achievements?: Yes Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 5 Playthroughs of each campaign. Approximate amount of time to 4500 : 3 Months hundreds of hours of playtime. PS: Despite the Steam warning, the game works in recent macOS versions, but the achievements are broken, none is triggered.- Estimated achievement difficulty: 8.5/10 ![]() I don’t see me doing it, but it would be replayable only for the “experience”. Achievements are related to progressing the story, finding hidden collectibles, and perfecting some levels, all very doable. You can revisit (some) previous chapters mid-game, but after a certain point you cannot backtrack. Value I’ve completed the game (including all achievements) in 8h (which included a second 1h playthrough since I had missed some collectables in the first chapters), so I think the price tag is fair despite its flaws. Also, for some reason you can get tired from running inside a virtual world. You cannot restart levels, you have to quit the game and return to the hub (although I don’t think there are deadends, this is cumbersome when trying perfect runs for the achievements). Collectibles don’t transfer from playthroughs (meaning that you have to replay the whole game if you miss one). In fact, the game lacks small Quality of Life details that affect the whole experience. The game only auto-saves when a level is completed, so mid-level progress is not saved, you’ll respawn in the hub after quitting. You can die, and will respawn on a checkpoint, which is often further away than it needed to be. Particularly in more “action-oriented” levels (like the airplane memory), the clunky controls become really frustrating. However, while the rough edges of the game give some character to the visuals, it gets annoying when they affect the gameplay. These attempt to be related to the memory being explored, with mixed success (is there any hidden message on having the player mindlessly trigger a slot machine at a carnival?). Gameplay The game is mostly an exploration game, with a few very simple puzzles and action sequences. In contrast, the “pure memories” found deep in the Soul Cloud are shown as traditional 2D drawings, which I think was a nice touch. Also, there are some jump scares that I felt were unnecessary, but that’s just me. Each memory has its unique setting and atmosphere although none are particularly memorable (and nothing as detailed and thoughtful as “What Remains of Edith Finch”, which has a similar premise but was released years later). By the end game you can have a rather consistent idea of the events surrounding the player, which was surprising given the fractured nature of the game.Īesthetics The visuals and sound effects are raw, but that actually fits well with the overall in-world setting: the memories and the Sound Cloud are not only deformed due to the nature of the virtual world, but also due to corruption. The plot is constructed by piecing together information from “pure memories” and collectible messages. You play as an employee visiting and “fixing” corrupted memories, trying to avoid a corrupted security system that is trying to terminate you. Plot The game takes place in a virtual reality within the game’s world, the Soul Cloud, where consciousnesses of dead people can be uploaded. Unfortunately, they are undermined by crude/rushed realisation. I bought it completely at random on a sale, and was surprised to find some real nice and creative ideas.
